Discover The Turk

If you ever find yourself in Pawling, New York, the name The Turk will likely come up in conversations about where to eat. Nestled at 42 Charles Colman Blvd, Pawling, NY 12564, this cozy Mediterranean-inspired restaurant blends the warmth of traditional Turkish cuisine with the casual charm of a local diner. Stepping inside, you’re greeted with aromas that instantly make you feel like you’ve entered a family kitchen-spices like cumin, paprika, and sumac dancing together in the air.

What strikes most visitors first is the balance between authenticity and comfort. The decor is simple yet tasteful, reflecting an atmosphere where both a casual lunch and a celebratory dinner feel right at home. Having visited multiple times, I’ve come to appreciate the consistency of both the service and the flavors. On my first visit, I ordered the lamb kebab, perfectly char-grilled, tender enough to cut with a fork, and served with warm pita and creamy hummus. Each bite was rich yet balanced-a clear sign of a chef who understands the nuances of Mediterranean seasoning.

Talking to locals, I found that many frequent this spot weekly. There’s something deeply personal about that. One Pawling resident told me that The Turk’s falafel “tastes just like the ones she had during her travels in Istanbul.” That authenticity doesn’t happen by accident. The restaurant sources fresh ingredients daily and uses traditional preparation techniques, from marinating meats overnight to slow-cooking stews in olive oil and herbs.

What really elevates the experience is the menu’s diversity. It’s not just about kebabs and gyros; there’s a thoughtful selection of vegetarian options, seafood dishes, and even a few modern twists. The “stuffed grape leaves” make a perfect starter-light, tangy, and neatly rolled, while the “chicken shawarma platter” delivers bold flavor without being too heavy. Pairing these with a glass of Turkish ayran or a local craft beer completes the experience beautifully.

A quick glance at online reviews reveals consistent praise for both the food and the atmosphere. On popular review platforms, customers highlight the welcoming staff, cozy interiors, and portion sizes that leave you satisfied but not overstuffed. According to recent surveys from the National Restaurant Association, over 65% of diners now prefer establishments that offer authenticity and quality over fast service. The Turk fits that mold perfectly-it’s a place that slows down time, letting you savor every detail.

During one of my later visits, I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who shared his story of moving from Ankara and opening the restaurant to bring a piece of home to New York. That personal connection shines through every plate. It’s evident that the recipes here have roots deeper than a cookbook-they carry family traditions and regional influences that make each dish special.

While some restaurants rely heavily on presentation or hype, The Turk builds its reputation on genuine flavors and heartfelt hospitality. The prices are fair for the quality, the service is attentive without being intrusive, and the dining room always feels alive with conversation. You can come here for a solo lunch, a date night, or even a family gathering, and it always feels right.

In all honesty, it’s hard to find a place that blends experience, flavor, and authenticity this seamlessly. Whether you’re exploring new cuisines or craving something comforting and familiar, this Pawling gem delivers every single time. The Turk isn’t just a restaurant-it’s a story told through spices, traditions, and smiles, right in the heart of 42 Charles Colman Blvd.

  • Excellent food and service in a pretty historic building. For my first visit, I started with some basics. I got the cold appetizer platter (artichoke hummus, babaganoush, labneh, feta, beets, eggplant) all served with pita bread they bake in house each day. It was delicious. My main course was doner lamb served with salad and a mix of rice and barley. The shavings of doner were flavorful and tender. I’ve had a lot of doner kebab. Often times they can be dry or gristly. This was delicious. I was given yogurt dip and a hot sauce to try. The staff are polite and attentive. They kindly explained some of the dishes I was not familiar with. The Turkish coffee was great, too! Highly recommend!

  • Decided randomly to stop into The Turk for lunch on a Saturday. Upon sitting down we received a complimentary olive oil/mustard dipping sauce and fresh made pita bread. The dipping oil had a different but delicious flavor and the pita bread kept coming out hot. We ordered the falafel dinner and the chicken saute. The chicken saute was very flavorful. The red sauce had robust flavor and wasn't acidic at all. The rice was delicious and went with the chicken saute nicely. The falafel dinner was a great size, also had great flavor and we were both full when we left. For dessert we had chocolate pudding which was very good. The restaurant is clean. Service is attentive and kind. The owner came to our table and talked with us for a bit. He's very friendly and customer experience oriented. At first glance you may think this restaurant is pricey but don't let the price deter you because the quality and flavors at The Turk are unmatched.

  • Gracious service and delicious food. I had the baba ganoush to start that came with pita and an olive oil mustard dip. Both were fresh, tasty and generous.M. I later had the grilled salmon that came with sautéd spinach, a heap of rice and salad. The flavors came together beautifully and the meal was filling and delicious. I took with me some baklava that was excellent — fresh and not overly sweet. Overall, exciting new spot in Pawling that I look forward to sampling again.

  • Walking into The Turk is like walking into the home of a new friend you know you’ll want to return to again and again. Everything is homemade and fresh—even the chocolate pudding is decadent and homemade. Some of the best Mediterranean food in NY hands down. In addition to ridiculously large portions of good food, your dining experience is personalized and personal, with impromptu lute performances to customized desserts, and overall warmth. This place is a gem.

  • The Turk is so underappreciated! I can't figure out why they aren't busier. The food is phenomenal. Bursting with flavor and you can tell they use high quality ingredients by the way the food tastes. The service is kind and speedy and we never felt rushed to leave. The owner and his nephew are there every time I've been in and they are both warm, welcoming and interested in the experience of the customer. Customer service at The Turk is top tier. In the restaurant, I enjoyed the complimentary olive oil and mustard dip with freshly warmed pita. Bursting with flavor, refreshing and tasty. I have also enjoyed their fried calamari (not pictured because it was gone before I could think to snap a pic) which was lightly breaded, fresh, never chewy and so delicious. I found the lemon to be enough for the calamari but also enjoyed the tomato sauce as well. I've had the feta cheese spread with warm fresh pita and enjoyed the blended flavor of the roasted red peppers with the feta. The flavor was smooth and creamy. I would love to go with a group of friends/family and order a little bit of everything because nothing has disappointed me yet. I've had the falafel dinner twice. The falafel are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The hummus and tahini blend so well together and have a smooth and savory flavor. I find the dish to be comforting and cozy. The falafel is accompanied by rice and a side salad, both of which are also delicious. My husband had the chicken saute which comes with a side of rice and even though he's generally not a fan of Mediterranean food he completely enjoyed his dish and finished the whole thing. He said the flavor of the red sauce and tenderness of the chicken was impressive and were reasons he enjoyed the dish. The atmosphere in The Turk is clean, modern and cozy. Tables are nicely sized so you don't feel cramped and the seating options are beautiful upholstered chairs or couches, very comfortable. The intricate lanterns/lights are stunning and mesmerizing. There is a full bar. Leave room for dessert! We had the chocolate pudding which was the perfect sweet treat to end our meal. We really enjoyed The Turk and wish Sinan and his team nothing but the best!!! Pawling is lucky to have you in town!!!

  • Absolutely Incredible!!! The owner and staff are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. The owner was so sweet and even he offered us different foods for free, just so we would be able to taste it. Not only was the food delicious, it was fresh and authentic turkish cuisine. You will feel so cared for and full for days after coming here. We liked it so much, we came again only a couple of days later!! I’m surprised there isn’t a line out the door. Highly recommend!

  • Absolutely delicious. Falafel. Beet Spread Pita. Chicken Saute. Puddings. All fantastic. Sweet Service and very kind and patient. You must visit. True Turkish coffee. Beautiful Couches and decor. Owner serenaded with a lute and song. He's so nice and talented. Will try to upload that video.

  • Highly recommend this place to eat. The food tasted great. We tried the doner kebab, lamb shish kebab, and the lamb shank. The only real downside were that the prices were a bit high. But the prices are all on their online menu so you won’t be surprised if you look ahead of time. I would recommend utilizing more traditional glasses for wine and beverages, but otherwise great service and food.
